This list of free international e-books is courtesy of  Dr. Cavanaugh's Educational Technology Web site.

Antologia della Letteratura Italiana
Italian: Novels, poetry, plays & other texts, both classic & contemporary in HTML for reading online.

Aozora Bunko
Over 2000 works of  Japanese literature. Formats include: HTML, ZIP, and Japanese e-book.

Athena Texts Francais
French: 10,000 eBooks (French & Swiss Authors) Literature, philosophy, history, economics, & science, etc.

Belarusian e-Library
Belarusian literature in Belarusian, with some English, German & other translations.

Bibliothèque nationale de France (National Library of France)
 French: Over 2500 digitized works.

Biblioteca Virtual do Estudante Brasileiro
Portuguese: Several hundred eBooks

Brasilian e-books 
Portuguese: Over sixty free titles from 26 authors, including José de Alencar, Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis and Afonso Henrique da Lima Barreto. All public domain books or with author permission. Formats include Word, PDF, RTF and Palm PDB.

Digital Library of India
Indian: Over 29,000 books predominantly in Indian languages.

Gottingen State & University Library (Germany)
German: Approximately 4500 eBooks titles, primarily in German, French, & English, devoted mostly to Exploration & Travel Literature & Mathematics (the English-Language titles are indexed).

Libros Tauro (Argentina)
Spanish: Several thousand eBooks

New Threads Chinese Cultural Society
Chinese: Electronic library archive of Chinese classic texts.

ngiyaw eBooks (German)
German works with some classic English and Hungarian books also. Formats include: (.pdf),  (.prc), (.lit),   (.tr), and (HTML) for your Web browser.

    An e-book reference list created by the blog Hongkiat. Hongkiat is a design weblog dedicated to designers and bloggers, which often features articles about e-resources, including e-readers and e-books.
  • Barnes & Noble Free E-books
    Barnes and Noble offers free e-books, including some popular fiction titles, self published e-books, and classic fiction titles. (Must be read on a B&N reader.)
  • E-Book Directory
    The E-book Directory is an aggregator for links to different online sites which offer free e-books.
  • Feedbooks
    A Paris-based book seller and distributor of free e-books.

  • Free
    For fiction e-books, from romance to mystery, or non-fiction, from business information to self-improvement.
    Free includes self-published material and non-copyrighted e-books.
  • Hathi Trust Digital Library
    Many institutions are collaborating to make e-books available to everyone. At the site you'll see LOGIN on the top right (which is free), and will allow you to view and download full text that has no 3rd-party restrictions.
  • International Children's Digital Library
    More than 4,000 free e-books for children, in 55 different languages.
  • NASA E-books
    Books about aeronautics, history, and more.
  • National Academies Press
    Hundreds of academic publications free to read online. Create a free account first. Read more about it at:
  • Open Library
    This is an initiative of the INTERNET ARCHIVE. Note the "e-books only" box in the top right.
  • Project Gutenberg  
    Over 33,000 free e-books are available for download at Project Gutenberg. These are e-books published before the 20th century and are free because their U.S. copyrights have expired.
  • SmashWords
    This site has quickly become one of the preferred places for self-published authors. This is the list of free books, but there are also books for various low prices, and you can filter by length!
  • Smithsonian Digital Library
    Here are online books and a few serials from the Smithsonian. They will work on all e-readers.
    Works of literature no longer in the public domain, so freely available.
